Backpacking Tents

What Is A Backpacking Tent?

Backpacking tents as you could have guessed are made for multi-day hikes where you will not be near any type of civilization and basically need to carry all your equipment with you. Naturally because you are carrying all that equipment you want to make sure that what you are carrying is compactable and light weight.

Therefore, there is a special version of tent solely for backpackers. These tents need to be light weight, pack down small enough to carry easily on a backpack, and versatile enough to be able to withstand a variety of weather conditions.

What Makes These Tent So Good For Backpacking

Most tents are made of polyester because of its durability and light weight. However, some can also be made from nylon which is also light weight but not very durable in the long run. Modern technology often combines these materials, along with coating them in a silicone, polyurethane blend to cut down on weight and still provide protection from inclimate weather. Backpacking tents usually fall into the latter category of fabrics. Of course, the percentage of each core fabric blend might change depending on the particular conditions of which you are wanting to go backpacking in. In addition, many backpacking tents, or just tents in general, have a good portion of the tent made with screens to help cut down on weight, allow ample air flow while still providing protection from insects.

Ease Of Use Construction

Backpacking tents are designed to be packed away and easily carried which is also why you will not see a Ten person backpacking tent. Most of these tents are made to sleep one, maybe two, people at most. Usually, any bigger and they start to become too cumbersome to hike with.

If you are like most people, you tend to sleep laying down. That is why backpacking tents also tend to be long yet low to the ground. For the most part, these tents are just made for getting out of the elements while you are sleeping or storing your stuff for the night. The long, low height also adds to the durability of the tents in windy conditions. Fabrics and design are nothing unless there is a well thought out skeletal structure in place for these tents. Most of these tents have very light weight, flexible, hollow, carbon fiber, poles which can be easily attached to the tent. Either with external clips, incorporated guide throughs, or a combination of the two. Whichever way they are designed, they are meant to be easy to set up, take down and packed away quickly. You do not want to spend half the morning trying to pack up your tent when you are looking to get in a good 20 miles hike for the day.

Choose and Test The Right One For You

With the growing trend of multi-day, multi-seasonal, short or long-distance hiking, there are a growing number of styles of backpacking tents out on the market.
