The Medicrine

In a time long forgotten. During a time when people were not the top of the food chain. Grew a community of people who were constantly being tormented by a ferocious beast. This beast had the head and body of a lion, only it was five times bigger and covered in scales instead of fur. This beast had several large canine teeth that protruded from its mouth, and claws sharp enough and powerful enough to cut through a person with ease.

The locals called this beast the “Medicrine”. The Medicrine only had to eat but once a month. When it did eat though, it ate a lot. The most favorite thing it went after were people. After people, it often went after any type of waterfowl.

Luckily for the people of the community, the Medicrines’ hunger began like clockwork. Every month at the same exact time, the Medicrine would emerge from its’ den and begin hunting.

The people of the community were not dumb by any means. They had built a shelter deep inside the side of a mountain. This shelter could be securely closed off by an ingenious pully system attached to several large boulders. The only problem was that a team had to stay outside the shelter to work the pully system, and lead the Medicrine away from the shelter to keep everyone safe. This team was often considered to be the bravest of the brave and strongest of the strong within the community.

The system was working fine for the community for some time now. Men and women alike would train to have this honor of being picked to be part of the team. Kids even looked up to the “Keepers of the Shelter” as they were referred to.

That is until a virus had swept through the community. Many of the “Keepers of the Shelter” got very sick and could barely move. Those who didn’t get sick were either too young or had some sort of injury that kept them from being chosen as one of the team for the month.

Yet the time had come for the Medicrine to begin its’ feeding. The community elders had to make a decision on who were going to take the place of the “Keepers of the Shelter”.

With not many to choose from, they chose a young athletic teenage boy named Vac, an equally athletic teenage girl named Cina, and a scrawny sickly-looking boy named Tion, who was highly intelligent but suffered from every type of allergy known to man.

Cina and Vac had only started their training as one of the “Keepers of the Shelter”, and were thrilled at the chance to be one of the youngest to provide such a duty. Tion was shaking in his boots just thinking about what they had to do.

The morning had come, and the community had taken their journey to the shelter. Soon after their arrival a defining roar sounded throughout the land. The Medicrine had begun!

Without a second to lose Tion, Cina and Vac all got to their places around the complex pully system and lowered the huge boulders into place.

Once the community was secure in the shelter, the three “Keepers of the Shelter” made their way to another known hiding place. It wasn’t nearly as secure as the original shelter but it offered some protection, and if the Medicrine did find them it would slow it down enough for them to escape.

Mid day came about, and Vac had taken up post around the hiding place, keeping a lookout for the Medicrine. Tion and Cina kept as quiet and as still as they could inside.

Suddenly they heard a loud crash accompanied by a tremendous roar. Only it was coming from the community shelter. Quickly, the three of them went running toward the shelter, only to find the Medicrine clawing and pawing at the huge boulders. It must have caught the scent of the community walking to the shelter and followed it there.

The Medicrine was determined to get to all those people inside the shelter and started breaking apart the boulders that were keeping them safe.

Cina turned to Vac and Tion and asked what are they going to do.

Vac just shrugged his shoulders and grunted, “I Dunno”. Vac was athletic but he wasn’t the most intelligent of people.

Tion turned away from what was going on and sat down staring at the ground.

Cina yelled at both of them saying, “A lot of help you two are!”

Like a bolt of lightning Tion got an idea. He turned to Vac and Cina and started barking out orders but in a quiet whisper so the Medicrine wouldn’t hear him.

“Vac, you go down to the pond and catch a Loon, then bring it over to the sink hole over by the edge of the woods. Wait for Cina and I to get there”.

“Check”, said Vac, and off he ran down to the pond.

“Cina, I need you to make your way back to the village and grab a bag full of sugar. Then make your way to the sink hole to meet Vac and I.”

“Got it”, Said Cina and off she went.

Tion made his way over to the side of the sink hole and started building a fire. While waiting for Vac and Cina to show up, he got a couple large branches and carved points at the end of each.

Soon Van and Cina showed up. Both of them looked at Tion and asked what they heck he was doing.

“No time to explain,” said Tion. “Vac I need you to gut the Loon, and Cina I need you to fill it with all the sugar in the bag.”

As soon as Cina finished, Tion took the Loon and shoved it on the end of one of the pointed branches. He then held the Loon over the fire. Cina looked at Tion and yelled, “Are you crazy? The Medicrine is about to eat our whole community and you’re sitting here cooking dinner?”

Tion yelled back, “Just wait!” “Any minute now the Medicrine is going to catch the scent of the cooking Loon and make his way over here.”

Vac nervously spoke, “You’re trying to lure the Medicrine over here. To where we are. Are you crazy?”

Tion replied, “Not crazy, I just need the two of you to go hide on the other side of the sink hole. If my plan doesn’t work and the Medicrine gets me, I need the two of you to try and lure it farther away from the community.”

Soon a huge roar came from the direction of the shelter and the three of them could hear the crashing of the Medicrine running through the woods directly at them. Vac and Cina made their way to the other side of the sink hole and hid. Tion grabbed the burning Loon and made his way to the edge of the woods.

Soon the Medicrine was in sight and Tion started running towards the sink hole with the Loon in his hands. The Medicrine got closer and closer to Tion. Right before Tion got to the edge of the sink hole the Medicrine swiped knocking Tion to the side. Not before he tossed the burning Loon over the edge of the sink hole. The Medicrine was determined to get the burning Loon and dove after it. Down, down, down fell the Medicrine until there was a quiet “Thudd”.

Vac and Cina ran out of their hiding place to go check on Tion. Tion was a little banged up from the Medicrine swipe but was going to be alright.

Vac and Cina gave Tion a huge hug and asked, “How did you know that was going to work?”

Tion replied, “Honestly guys, it came to me as soon as we saw the Medicrine was going after the community. Have you ever noticed that our names put together spelled (Vaccination). That’s when a song my mother taught me popped in my head…

“Just a Loon full of sugar made the Medicrine go down.”
