Tombstone Of Terror

Scary Story | Halloween | Sleep Overs

This Story Begins...

Best friends from birth, Allan and Matt lived in Hell Michigan all their lives. No one is sure if it was because they grew up in a town called “Hell”, or if it was because they thought they once saw a ghost floating through a cemetery one night, but Matt and Allan had a strange fascination with cemeteries and the spirit world. They considered themselves amateur ghost hunters and were active members of various on-line organizations revolved around ghost hunting.

Allan and Matt believed that the spirits became more active the night before Halloween. “Devils’ Night” as it is known in Michigan, was considered a night of mischief and fear. Not for Matt and Allan. They saw it as an opportunity to hunt for ghosts. Every year they would research and pick out certain cemeteries and set up a camera and an audio recording device and call to the spirits in the graveyard to visit with them.

Each year, they would go to a cemetery, and each year they would come back with grainy night footage and scratchy audio recordings of them asking for various spirits to answer their questions and show themselves.

One year Matt had discovered a cemetery near Grand Haven Michigan called Lake Forest Cemetery that was supposed to be haunted. There were tales of a “Phantom Gateway” and a “Stairway to Hell”. Beyond excited to hear about this, he immediately called up Allan and they both started to research and plan out their adventure to the cemetery on “Devils Night”.

Matt and Allan didn’t seem to be concerned about the warnings and were more excited about getting some real footage or proof of the spirit world.

During their research, they found out that Lake Forest Cemetery had tombstones dating back to the early 1800’s. The cemetery was noted by other ghost hunters to be a hot spot for spirits and ghosts. Both Good and Bad. They noted that Good spirits would lead you out of the cemetery and away from the dangerous spirits through various signs and signals. Almost all the ghost hunters warned though that the Bad spirits were in fact REALLY BAD and to use all caution when venturing through the grounds at night.

The sun went down on “Devils Night” at the Lake Forest Cemetery. Matt and Allan had decided to wait until just past midnight to sneak onto the holy haunted grounds. Afraid of being caught for trespassing, they decided to climb the fence near the rear of the cemetery and even though it was dark out they made it a point to leave their flashlights off as to not draw attention to themselves or scare off any spirits that would be moving around.

They soon found themselves at the foot of the “Stairway to Hell”. Where most people would be terrified at this point, Matt and Allan had to try and keep themselves calm from the excitement they felt. At the top of the stairway, they gazed upon several old ornate tombstones. They couldn’t read the inscriptions on them because it was too dark to read, so they just decided to start with the oldest most mangled looking tombstone they could find.

Matt set down an audio recording device and pressed record. He then said aloud,

“We would like to speak to whoever lies beneath this stone.”

In response, all they heard was the scratching noise that seemed to come from behind the tombstone.

With a calm voice Alan said,

“Please tell us your name.”

Again, the only response was a scratching noise, so Matt said,

“We only wish to speak with you. Please show yourself.”

Suddenly, both young men felt the air turn cold, and a tall, dark shadow rose from behind the tombstone. Allan and Matt had dreamed of this moment all their lives. After reading about many encounters with spirits, they were not afraid. In fact, they were both excited. The shadow started to sway from side to side, then started towards them. The boy’s excitement started to dwindle and turn to nervousness. The shadow then started to grow arms and reach out to them. At this point their nervousness turned to outright fear. They both realized the shadow apparition was one of the bad spirits they were warned about and meant them harm.  Right then the shadow swept down, engulfing them, and pulled them into the ground beneath the tombstone.

The next morning, the caretaker of the cemetery found the audio recorder on the ground by the tombstone. He turned it on, and after each question, he heard the following response:

“Yes…I am here.”

“My name is never spoken by the living.”

“If I show myself, it will be the last thing you will ever see.”

“I got you both!”

The caretaker hit stop on the recorder. He looked down at the tombstone and produced a little smile. He then went over to his tool shed, lifted a lid to a trunk and tossed the recorder into a pile with many others.
