Dome Tent
What Are Dome Tents?
Dome tents can be thought of the middle child between the backpacking tents and the big Multi-Room tents. The dome tent is the most common design tent today. With two or more flexible poles that cross in the center and are anchored to the corners and sides of the tent, this tent is easily distinguishable from other types.
Dome tents come in a range of different sizes, with capacity ranging from a single person up to about eight people. With their double-wall designs, the breathable inner tent, usually made mostly of mesh with a waterproof floor, and the exterior wall comes in the form of a rainfly resting on top of the poles. Single wall tents have an interior that is waterproof throughout, which does sacrifice some breathability of the fabric and may cause some condensation on the interior. With the addition to some well-placed screens and zip up screen covering, this can be mitigated quite easily.
Perfect For the Beginner Camper
Most people start their journey into camping with a Dome Tent. They have a variety of sizes to choose from and fall into the more affordable price range for most people.
Dome tents are lighter than other tent options because they are often constructed of the same materials as backpacking tents. Unlike backpacking tents, the have a decent amount of interior room for more long-term stay camping. Vestibules (the area around the tent doors that’s sheltered by the tent’s rain fly) are often included for extra gear storage, but not all dome tents include them.
Though they are larger than backpacking tents, Dome tents are still quite easy to put up and take down. However, they still take a little longer to fold up correctly, roll up into their carrying case or bag, and tend to be bulkier than backpacking tents. They can still be stored away quiet easily for those who want a tent but haven’t yet caught the camping bug. Yet!
A common downside of dome tents is that they tend to catch wind easier, and if they are cheaply made or poorly designed, they may flatten down in higher winds.
Find The Right One For You
With so many styles, and interior storage options on the market today you want to make sure you do your research and get recommendations from others before you purchase your Dome tent. If possible, I would even find myself a reputable dealer who has some Dome tents set up so you can actually get inside and get the feeling of them. If there is going to be more than just you sleeping/camping in the tent I would bring them along as well. If you both, or all of you, have to “live” in there for a time, everyone should be happy with what you pick out.
