Hybrid Camper Trailers

What Is A Hybrid Camper Trailer?

Hybrid Trailers are basically hard-shell Travel Trailers which includes Pop-Up Trailer qualities to them. Most Hybrid Trailers have the pop-out areas on either the front, back or both. Some even come with the pop-outs on the side. These pop outs usually are the sleeping areas and are manually operated and constructed of the same polyvinyl polyester nylon and mesh that you would find on Pop-Up Trailers and Bigger Multi-Room Tents. (Pro Tip: the mattresses that come in these trailers are not like your mattress at home and you might want to replace them before an extended stay.) Some styles of Hybrid Trailers even come with slide outs which would simply help to expand the living quarters.

Pro's and Con's

The unique design of these Hybrid Trailers helps them to sleep more people in the same amount of space as a traditional hard shell camper trailer of the same dimensions. While still providing many of the same creature comforts. However, because of the tent like pop-outs for sleeping, these trailers tend to have a harder time keeping the internal ambient temperature consistent during extreme temperature fluctuations. Not to mention, sound has an easier time traveling through the fabric then it would the hard shell of the camper. This is perfect for those who want to be lulled asleep by the night sounds of the woods, but not so good if you are camping near a busy road or highway.

Creature Comforts

The main living quarters of these trailers can still be quite comfortable. Especially when slide outs are included. Many of them contain a kitchen area fully equipped with a refrigerator, stove top/oven, microwave, dining and entertainment area. Depending on the style and layouts many even come with a full-size bathroom. With these creature comforts in place, rest assured you are going to have to have an electric hook up or generator to power your 30-to-50-amp appliances. With the advent of Eco-friendly living, many campers are coming equipped with solar power battery banks. Which may add to the cost and weight of the trailer but can be seen as a perk if there is ever a power failure at your campground or keeping your food cold while traveling to and from your destination.  If you are blessed to have indoor plumbing you will also have to take care of your Fresh, Grey, and Black water tanks. Meaning a fresh water hook up and sewage dump station would be preferable but not necessary at your campsite. If not available, you will want to be sure to have a location to take care of your Grey and Black water.

Big Perks in a Small Package

Hybrid Trailers can range from 13 to 25 feet long, not including Pop-Outs, with a weight range of 3 to 7,000 pounds. Making them easy for most Trucks and SUVs to tow. These trailers are great for the weekend camper and though they may cost roughly the same as traditional travel trailers, they do offer more sleeping options, allowing bigger families another option when considering a Camper trailer.
