Pop-Up Tents
What Are Pop-Up Tents?
Pop-Up tents are also a newer more modern version of tent. The reason it is called a pop-up tent is because as soon as you get it out of its’ carrying case, it quite literally “Pops-Up” and takes its’ form. Many refer to them as “instant” tents. Like the Inflatable tents, these tents are not as well known in the camping community. Mainly because it is an emerging market, and people have to get to know them a little better.
How Do Pop-Up Tents Work?
The "Pop" Up
These tents work by having “spring loaded” tent poles already attached and established within the fabric of the tent. These tent poles can be twisted and bent down to form a small circle. While they are in this folded up position, they are housing tension which makes them want to stretch back out straight again. Which is why they have to be secured down in a carrying case when not in use, or else they will pop-up again. This spring-loaded style mechanism for establishing a tent makes it by far the easiest and quickest way to set up a tent.
The Fold Down
In order for these tents to be able to twist and fold down, much like origami, the fabric needs to be flexible and light. Unfortunately, because of this lightweight fabric, they are more prone to ripping or tearing. Plus, with the unique way these tents are already put together and have to fold down, if the tear is at a certain spot, trying to mend the tear or patch it up will compromise the foldability and “Pop-Up” ability they are known for. This lightweight fabric also tends to be less water resistant and wind resistant as normal tents. Meaning they are generally good for fair weather camping conditions.
Gaining Strength
It is good to note however that because of this emerging industry, this style tent has been undergoing many design improvements and one day might be more comparable to the more traditional style tents. For now, the pop-up tent is more useful for the quick kids play dates, soccer games and back yard camping adventures.
