"Class A" Motorhome or RV

What is a Class 'A' Motorhome or RV

Class A Motorhomes are the largest of the three types of motorhomes. They use a very strong, heavy-duty chassis that are typically designed for large commercial busses and 18-wheelers. Unlike busses and 18-wheelers you are not required to have a special driver’s license to operate them. However, it is strongly recommended that you check your local DMV States requirements. For instance, in Michigan, you need a recreational double “R” endorsement if you are going to be pulling anything behind your motorhome, like a “Break-Away” vehicle or boat. Either way, it is a Great idea that you get additional training on how to operate this large of vehicle if you are not already familiar with them.

A Variety To Choose From

These come in a variety of sizes, and layouts. The average size (Length) range of most Class As’ is between 21 and 45 feet, and 12 to 12.5 feet high (Exterior). Providing you options to choose the right size you feel comfortable with and suits your family’s needs.  The smaller ones typically only sleep up to 2 people while the larger more spacious ones can sleep up to 8 to 10 people. Almost no matter what size you choose, most class A motor homes include at least one slide out. The bigger ones can have up to four.

Feels Like Home

These are homes on wheels, so these motor homes include many of the creature comforts you would expect to have at home. Like, a fully functional kitchen with refrigerator, stove or cooktop, bathrooms/showers, heating/cooling, and now many of them come with some sort of WiFi. There are even Eco-friendly motorhomes which will run off solar battery banks when you are traveling to and from your campsites to ensure all your perishables are kept fresh and cool when you get there.

Making The Home Possible

Given you have these creature comforts available you should also assume that you have the underlying infrastructure to manage all of these. For instance, most Class A RVs’ carry a roughly 40-50 gallon Fresh water tank; 40-45 gallon Grey water tank; 30-40+ Black water tank; and 25-40+ gallon Propane storage. Not to mention the average electrical draw capacity ranges anywhere between 30 to 50 amps. Either via generator or land hook up. Helping to power some features available like, power self-leveling jack stands, slide-outs, water pumps, water heaters, power awnings, and of course a television for Saturday morning cartoons.

What Does That Mean For You?

It means, you have the capability to camp or travel very comfortably. Also you should have some general knowledge and the capabilities of maintaining these amenities while in use or preparing them for storage. It wouldn’t hurt to have some numbers written down and a backup plan as a Just In Case something where to happen to them and they need to be serviced.

Fueling Your Adventure

With the size range of Class A motorhomes, heavy duty chassis construction, and all the given accoutrements of comfortable traveling, you can imagine that these babies carry a lot of weight. You’re talking in the range of 12 to 30 thousand pounds, or between 6 and 15 tons of weight. Not to mention if you are towing a “Break-Away” vehicle. Which most Class A’s are capable to tow up to 5,000 pounds. That is only going to add to the weight.

So, this means you are definitely going to be using up some fuel going from place to place. How much? Most typically get 4 to 6 miles per gallon (MPG). However, this can be a small price to pay for traveling in comfort, style and more importantly, Your Own Space.
