Class "C" Motorhome or RV

Class C Motorhome

What Are Class 'C' Motorhomes?

Funny enough, class C RV’s are often called the Goldilocks of the RV/Motorhome world. They are not too big and not too small. However, they may not just be “Just right” for everyone. Class Cs’ offer the versatility and flexibility of the Class B RVs while still providing most of the luxuries and creature comforts as the Class A Motorhomes.

Many of this style of RV comes with optional slide out which help to add to the available floor space and layout arrangements. Even the smallest of Class Cs’ can sleep 4 comfortably. Like both Class A and B motorhomes, Class C motorhomes come with a functional kitchen with a refrigerator, stove or cooktop, sink and possibly a microwave. They also come equipped with a bathroom, lounge area full of capabilities to hook up various forms of entertainment and sleeping areas. Un-like Class B motorhomes, this class of RVs are large enough to even be able to have a retractable porch area or toy hauler if this is something that is a must for you.

Like A Home On The Road

To accommodate many of these luxuries, Class C RVs’ carry Fresh, Grey, and Black water tanks. They also typically have an electrical capacity between 30 and 50 amps. This can be provided by either an onboard generator or land hook-up. Some even are becoming more environmentally friendly by have solar powered battery banks to run some of the appliances during travel or low consumption times.

Like Class A RVs’, it is recommended that you become familiar with these infrastructure components to make sure you are caring for your investment. Either while you are out camping or even getting ready for winter and going to be storing your RV for the off season. Plus, as most seasoned RV owners will tell you, it is good practice to have phone numbers for service technicians and information guides available for when and if any of these components fail.

Size & Weight

Class C Motorhomes are most recognized by their “attic” which is located above the driving cab. This is usually used as an extra sleeping space or as additional storage. They range from 21 to 41 feet in length averaging about 10 feet in height. They still have a standard van frame and truck chassis with an attached cab. The longest of the Class C RVs are often referred to as “Super C” motorhomes. These can also have either gas or diesel engines depending on the size, preference, and use. They do run a little heavier than the Class B RVs, averaging in weight between 10-15 thousand pounds, (5 to 6 Tons). With the variable sizes and layouts, they average about 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG).

With the weight being less than 26,000 pounds, most Class C motorhomes do not require a specialized driver’s license to operate. Some States like Michigan do however require you to have a recreational double “R” license if you are towing a “Break-Away” vehicle or boat behind your motorhome. It would be your best interest to check in with your local State DMV requirements before you decide to purchase a Motorhome. No matter what, it would be a very smart idea to find someone to teach you how to drive these larger vehicles and take some time to practice driving them before you head off on your first Camping adventure.
