"A" Frame Tent

What Is An 'A' Frame Tent?

The “A” frame tent is called such because of its appearance looks like a capital A. Next to the Teepee, the “A” frame tent is one of the most basic, easiest and most versatile style of tent. The “A” structure of the tent gives it the ability to block the wind and divert water away from the center sleeping area, providing a sturdy, dry area for someone to get out of any inclimate weather.

There are different ways to construct an A frame tent. The most basic way is to tie a line horizontally between two trees or poles (a stick or pole will do in place of a line) and drape some sort of fabric over it. Staking or weighing down the sides of the fabric angled away from the center to create an open sleeping or living space in the middle. If poles are used instead of trees, Guy Lines are needed on the poles to create opposite tension away from the weight of the fabric.

The Go To Tent

You will notice in a lot of old-time westerns, military movies, or even survival shows use an A frame tent because of its ease, simplicity and sturdiness of use.

More modern and involved A frame tents incorporate some sort of internal or external skeleton framework to support the fabric. Still needing some sort of staking or Guy Lines to keep the tent in place

Big or Small, They'll Cover It All

The A frame tent is one of the most versatile styles of tents because it can range from very small, (where only one person can sleep inside), to very large, (where you can literally have a full-blown party within the structure). However, as the A frame tent gets larger, the center peak of the “A” needs to be raised higher and higher. That means it either needs to have a very large length of fabric to cover all the way to the ground on either side, or you need to start constructing walls on either side. Technically this is still an A framed tent because the roof structure still looks like a capital A. However, many people will consider these to be called simply “Walled Tents”.
