What Is A Teepee Tent?
The original Teepee is a conical structure, traditionally made of animal skins upon wooden poles. A Teepee is distinguished from other conical tents by the smoke flaps at the top of the structure. However, because the term “Teepee” has made its’ way into the modern vernacular, most conical structures, which resembles a teepee are called a “Teepee”.
Quick History Of The Teepee Tent
The Teepee is the original tent concept of which all other tents are based off. These structures were meant to be set up and taken down quickly, and easily packed up for traveling.
The main reason these structures were used so often is because they catered to the nomadic lifestyle of Native Cultures around the world. Constantly having to pick up and travel, following the various Heards of wild game throughout the different seasons.
What Makes The Teepee Tent So Special?
The conical shape of the Teepee Tent is a very sturdy geometric shape, which helps the tents withstand high winds, and repel heavy rains, without losing much of its structural integrity. So, you can see why this was a very popular tent/home for people around the world.
In the more traditional Teepees with the opening at the top, you may be asking, “What did people do when it rains?”. To answer, most of the Teepees have closable flaps to adjust the amount of wind and rain out. Or even adjust the amount of heat or smoke would be able to exit trough the top.
Some innovative families would create a rain catching system close to the top opening and funnel it down to a basin on the floor. Almost like the first style of indoor plumbing.
Blending The Old With The New
With modern technology fusing with old world knowledge, the Teepee tent tends to be much more sturdy, lighter and even more comfortable than its predecessors. Some variations of the Teepee tent even have side walls to give a little more space.
You may not have even considered buying a Teepee like tent for your camping trip, but honestly, some of the modern designs they are making now are super stylish and not to mention unique. Possibly making you the talk of the campgrounds and earning you some friends along the way.
