Tunnel Tents
What Are Tunnel Tents?
Tunnel tents are a newer style tent that is making a breakthrough in the camping world. The reason is because they are very similar to the Dome tents where they have matching length poles that go over the structure, so there are no worries on which tent pole goes where. Tunnel tents differ because they are longer and more cylindrical, and absolutely need guy lines to create tension pulling on either side to keep it up right. Without these guy lines, these tents would collapse down onto itself. Once up and secured down, these tents can still withstand pretty harsh environments because they, like most tents, are comprised of a polyester-nylon blend type of fabric, usually with a silicone/polyurethane coating to thwart off bad weather.
A Home Away From Home
These tents offer up a measurable amount of more space in length, width and height than Dome Tents. The tunnel like structure allows it to be constructed in a variety of sizes. Some are made to comfortably sleep two, while others can be big enough to sleep ten to twelve plus inside. So, in a sense, there is a size and style perfect for your size family.
The larger Tunnel tents even come with attachable wall to create two or three separate rooms, perfect for bigger families. Others may also include an entrance vestibule area for sitting or stowing away gear while not in use or during a rainy afternoon. With the additional height and width of these tents, the ability to have raised cots or larger inflatable mattresses with in them is possible. In a sense they are much more comfortable for those who have…ummm…much more camping experience under their belt and do not want to sleep on the ground anymore.
Plus, they are much more accessible for those who require a wheelchair or any other supporting devices to get around. Camping isn’t just for those perfect people who can sit down or stand up from the ground without cracking every joint in their body and make sounds like a wounded Buffalo. (Guilty!)
Best Style Tent For The Long Haul Camp Trips
The Tunnel tent has become a very popular style tent for long term campers because of its size to weight ratio, durability, accessibility and the amount of interior space available. With any style tent, it is recommended to do your research on the styles and brands of tent available. Get out there and find a reputable dealer in your area. Talk with people who have one on your next camping trip. Borrow one from a friend or relative. Whatever you must do to find the right style that will suit you and your family’s needs. Remember…even though some tents report that they comfortably sleep six, only to find out when you set it up, you realize that they meant (six) five-year-old girls from a pigmy tribe in South America.
