Why Should I Even Go Camping?

Simple answer: “Why Not?”

However, most people are not satisfied with that answer so I will try and give you a more in-depth reason of “Why should you go Camping?”.

Camping brings us back to Ourselves:

Not too long-ago people had to live strictly off the land. Many still do today however, most people in the general population of the continental United States do not.

[According to the Conservation Institute, over 1.7 billion people are living off the grid, meaning they do not rely on public utilities (electricity, water, etc.)]

This means that people often had to rely on what they were physically able to accomplish and utilize their own knowledge and experience in order to achieve their goals. So when you hear the phrase “Bringing back to ourselves” or “Getting back to our roots”, it is referring to those days when people couldn’t just pick up their smart phone or use the internet to get the answers they want, or call someone else to do a task they themselves are physically unable to do.

Camping is sort of a benchmark or test to help you gauge your own abilities of the basics. Can you cook for yourself? Can you clean up after yourself? Can you provide a shelter from the weather/elements? Do you work well with others or are you better by yourself. Perhaps there is a balance between the two that you feel comfortable with.

Camping helps bring us together:

Sure, camping helps us get back in touch with ourselves, but it also has the ability to help us relate to one another on a whole other level. We know we can’t do everything ourselves and need the help of others if we are going to get things done and have a good time. Camping helps us see the strengths and weaknesses in ourselves and others while almost forcing us to learn to work together. Without the distractions of modern-day items surrounding us at the campsite, we must revert to the most basic form of entertainment which is simply getting to know one another through the form of verbal communication. I know this seems odd, but hey it works!

Camping gets you back in touch with Nature:

Most of us check what the weather will be on our phones or computers on a daily basis. Then of course plan our days accordingly.

This, however, is not getting in touch with Nature. Nature is so much more than the weather. Nature is far too complicated to understand and predict. That is why even the most sophisticated computer models around the world have a hard time predicting what the weather will be like any further out than 5 days. And that is just the conditions of the atmosphere around certain geographical locations.

Nature can be equated to tens of thousands of musicians playing thousands of different instruments to millions of different songs of every genre of music over time, matched up to all the YouTube videos, linked up to billions of computers that when timed just right can perform the most beautiful symphony of sights, sounds, and feelings anyone can imagine.

When you get back to Nature you are in a sense taking all those things and putting them back in sync. It’s our day to day living in the hustle of today’s society that turns that beautiful symphony into noise. It’s when you take the time to be outside, be quiet, and be still, will Natures’ supercomputer synchronize everything back up (including yourself) and help you see, hear, and feel the big picture again.

Camping Teaches and Prepares you for Life:

All the aspects of camping you have to do helps prepare you for life. As mentioned above. You have to know or learn how to cook and prepare your meals. You have to be able to properly clean up after yourself. You have to be able to protect yourself from the elements. Along the way of learning how to do all these things you are going to make mistakes. Things are not going to go the way you want them to. Sometimes everything happens all at once or not at all. So you have to take a minute, be still, be quiet, take a deep breath and re-sync yourself, and then move on.

Camping Gives you a break from your Routine:

Humans have the innate want to progress and move forward in life. However, sometimes you get that feeling of being “stuck” in life. You want to improve, you want to progress in your life, but you find that your days are all the same. Sure, there may be a party here and there. Or a Holiday from time to time. Even then, your daily routine barley changes. Even when you go on vacation, you find you do the same things in the same way. With camping though, everything changes. Now you have to think about what it will take to do simple tasks like brushing your teeth. How are you going to cook a meal for four people over an open fire? What do you do when the sun goes down and there is no television or lights for that matter. The simplest of routines now takes a little more effort, which helps you to re-evaluate how things are done. The more you go camping, during different times of the year, in different locations, the more your routines must be modified and improved upon, which makes you feel like you are constantly progressing in some aspect of your life, which in turn helps to improve your mood.

Camping is FUN!

Overall camping is just fun. Think about it for a minute. You have been working hard all week. You have been busting you butt trying to keep your life at status quo. Keeping your home life clean and organized. Working to pay your bills. Managing schedules like a pro. Now it’s time to just get away from it all and give yourself some time to just sit and relax. Sure, there is some planning to do, and some organizing involved. As soon as you get to your campsite and have everything set up. It is time to just Let Go, Unwind, and truly be yourself. If you have kids, become a kid again and play, explore and just have fun with them. If you don’t have kids, remember what being a kid was like again and play, explore and just have fun. Either way you are a way from your normal life and camping is a time to relax.
